Brake problems are one of those things you really can’t afford to sit on. A squealing noise or a soft pedal might seem minor at first, but in most cases it means your braking system needs attention sooner rather than later. The longer it’s left, the more damage builds up and the more it costs to fix.
Mr Tune carries out full brake inspections and repairs on-site at your home or workplace across the Sydney metro area. There’s no need to drive an unsafe vehicle to a workshop or organise a tow. We come to you, assess the brakes properly, explain exactly what we find, and carry out the repair on the spot where parts allow.
The price is agreed before we start and there are no surprises when the job is done. Just honest advice, quality parts, and brakes you can rely on.
A brake service isn’t just swapping out the pads and calling it done. A proper inspection looks at the entire braking system to make sure every component is working the way it should and that nothing is being missed that could cause a problem down the road.
Mr Tune’s brake service covers an inspection of your brake pads and rotors for wear, checking your brake fluid level and condition, assessing callipers and brake lines for leaks or damage, and checking the handbrake operation. If your pads are worn, your rotors are scored, or your fluid is due for a change, we’ll explain what’s needed clearly and provide a quote before any work begins.
Brakes are obviously a safety item, so we don’t cut corners and we don’t recommend work that isn’t genuinely needed. You get a straight assessment and a clear path forward.
There are several signs that your brakes are telling you it’s time for an inspection. The most common is a high-pitched squealing noise when you apply the brake pedal, which is usually the wear indicators built into the brake pads making contact with the rotor. That’s their job — to let you know the pads are getting low. A grinding or metal-on-metal sound is more serious and usually means the pads have worn through completely, which can cause significant damage to your rotors if left any longer. Other signs include the car pulling to one side when braking, a vibration or pulsing feeling through the brake pedal, a pedal that feels soft or sits lower than usual before it engages, or the brake warning light coming on. Any one of these is worth getting checked right away. Brakes are not something to put off and hope for the best.
Brake pad life varies quite a bit depending on your driving style, the type of vehicle you drive, and the conditions you drive in most often. For Sydney drivers, stop-start city driving and regular use on congested roads like Parramatta Road or the M4 tends to wear brake pads down faster than highway driving would. In general terms, brake pads can last anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 kilometres, but that’s a wide range and the only way to know where yours are at is to have them inspected. Rotors typically last longer than pads but do wear over time and can become scored or warped, particularly if worn pads have been left too long. The best approach is to have your brakes checked as part of every regular service so you’re never caught off guard.
Brake pads and rotors work together as a system. When you press the brake pedal, the brake callipers squeeze the pads against the rotors, which are the large metal discs attached to your wheels. That friction is what slows the car down. The pads are the sacrificial component in that relationship, designed to wear down over time so the rotors don’t have to. Rotors are harder wearing but they do eventually thin out, become scored from worn pads, or warp from heat cycles, particularly in heavier vehicles or in stop-start Sydney driving conditions. In some cases only the pads need replacing. In others, the rotors need to be replaced at the same time. Mr Tune will assess both during an inspection and give you an honest recommendation on what actually needs to be done.
The reality is, it depends on how worn they are, but the honest answer is that you shouldn’t. Worn brakes mean longer stopping distances, which in Sydney traffic is obviously a serious safety risk. If your pads have worn through to the metal backing plate, you’re also causing damage to your rotors with every stop, which turns what could have been a straightforward pad replacement into a more significant and more expensive repair. If your brakes are making noise, pulling, or feeling different in any way, the safest approach is to stop driving the car and get them looked at. Mr Tune can come to wherever your car is parked so you don’t have to drive it in an unsafe condition to get the problem sorted.
A standard brake pad replacement on one axle typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour. If rotors also need replacing at the same time, that adds some time depending on the vehicle. A full four-wheel brake job obviously takes longer. Because Mr Tune carries out repairs on-site at your home or workplace, the time the mechanic is working on your car is time you’re spending at home or in the office rather than waiting around somewhere. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when we assess the job so you know what to expect before we start.
We use quality brake components that meet or exceed the original manufacturer specifications for your vehicle. The right parts matter significantly when it comes to brakes — low-quality pads or rotors can affect stopping performance, wear unevenly, and create noise issues even after a fresh install. So, we don’t cut corners on the components we use. When you get in touch, we’ll confirm the parts required for your specific make and model and include them in the quote upfront. No vague pricing and no surprises when the job is done.
Absolutely. You don’t need to know exactly what the problem is before you call us. If something feels or sounds off with your brakes but you’re not sure what it is, that’s exactly the kind of situation a proper inspection is designed for. Mr Tune can carry out a full brake system assessment on-site, check every component, and give you a clear explanation of what we find and what, if anything, needs to be done. If everything is within spec and your brakes are fine, we’ll tell you that too. We’re not in the business of recommending work that isn’t needed, and a straightforward inspection gives you the information to make a confident decision either way.
